Storing your fruit and vegetables means using your common sense. Like all food, fruits and vegetables that are ripe when buying, keep best if kept in the refrigerator. Be smart if using your crisper and be sure that your fridge keeps humidity quite low. Excess moisture will ripen your fruit and vegetables, and this can lead to them being spoiled before you have a chance to enjoy them. 

  • Heads of lettuce, cabbages, cauliflower and broccoli can benefit from being divided after purchase. Once divided, simply wrap in paper towel before placing in the fridge. The paper towel allows for any moisture build up to be drawn away from your salads and vegetables, keeping them fresher for longer.

  • Purchasing un-ripened fruit is a great way to make your shopping lasts, but remember to store them correctly or they may not ripen at all, meaning wasted money and wasted food. An easy tip to remember when it comes to golden fleshed fruits like mangoes, peaches, apricots, and nectarines is to place them in a sunny dry, but not overly hot area. As their sun tan increases, so too does their flavour. When they’re ripened you can then enjoy their golden summer flavours.

  • Oranges, lemons, limes and other members of the citrus family benefit from a cool dark place. Before cutting open, remember to roll the fruit between your hand and the kitchen bench – this will release more juice and produce a greater taste when you cut into the fruit.

  • TV cooking sensation Nigella, recommends that when buying Avocado’s - buy early and use late! Buying rock hard avocados and storing at room temperature away from direct sunlight until ripened, with guarantee a smooth textured flesh with even and tasty flavours!

  • For whole pumpkin follow a similar guideline and it will keep for up to 2 years if kept in a cool dark place with temperatures around the 10 – 16 degree mark. If keeping a thermometer for the pumpkins isn’t your thing, then the bottom of your pantry will be perfect for 3 – 6 months.

  • Overall, when it comes to fruit and vegetables the general guidelines for storage are to buy fresh and use with 5 – 7 days. This will give you and your family great tasting and nutritious fruit and vegetables!
